The women empowerment project is very interesting and well structured, as well as the cultural activities in the program and the sightseeing trips. Idex staff in Jaipur – especially Rinku, Priya and Sandhya – are wonderful! They are really kind and they were always ready to help me for everything I needed. While working with the women, I realised I was giving my contribution, however small, to an effective project which gives local community, especially women and girls, many chances to study and work, thanks to the constant engagement of the NGO Saarthak and its operators on the one hand and to the volunteers’ support on the other. It was interesting to learn something about a program of this kind and above all to meet the women, the girls and the operators: their motivation helped me to understand better the importance of education. The 20-year-old girls who used to study at Saarthak center and now work there as teachers while attending the university showed me that education can really change lives. Finally, I had the opportunity to meet another culture without having to give up what I am and what I believe.

I had an amazing trip throughout all of India, something I wanted to do for a long time. IDEX was the ideal partner for me, I loved the itinerary, saw cultural as well as natural beauty and met so many interesting people. It was adventerous at times and I got a real taste of this unique country. The experiences will stay with me forever and helped me grow. There was 24/7 support from the team, especially from the beautiful and funny Rinku. She was an essential part in this trip and always ready to help or listen to our troubles. I feel like I got great value in terms of activities, and the different IDEX camps are clean, with lovely homecooked food. Thank you, IDEX India! So glad I went on this trip.

The whole project was perfect: the teachers, kids, students, staff, support from Idex. I hope it continues fot a long time.

In this time i had the chance to go with two projects, the elephant village and the women empowerment. I loved both of them! The kids in the Elephant Village were really nice and the teachers aswell. The only downside was that the teachers don’t give you a lot of support to do your volunteerwork in the elephant village. They make sure you have the right stuff like a whiteboard. But with the teaching nobody helped you. The rest of the experience was more than amazing!!!!

Returning to travelling after an absence of nearly 30 years I was searching for a company that would look after myself and my adult children, allowing us to experience ‘real’ life whilst volunteering. IDEX provided that with excellence – all the on ground staff are fantastic, the travel to and from your project, around sightseeing is sorted. It was an amazing experience in so very many ways.

My experience at the Women Empowerment Project was really good! I learned a lot about the Indian culture and people.I really enjoyed meeting all the wonderful women, girls and kids, who let me be part of their lives. I never felt lost in the project, even though I never really teached before. Surendra is a great support for everyone. It was fun teaching and it was wonderful seeing the process some students are making. I am gonna miss them. I am really glad I choose this project!

I had a lot of fun at the project, but the sense behind it is still not totally clear to me. I heard a lot of stories about how bad the government schools are, where the teachers don’t care about the pupils at all, there are not enough of them, they are not well educated, there are no resources etc. The school I was at (Gurukul School) was a private school, though. There the teachers all seemed very involved with the kids, there seemed to be enough, the classrooms had benches, blackboards, chalk etc. The class I taught at had a teacher, who then just spent her mornings correcting workbooks from what I could tell. That does not seem like a good use of a volunteer. I asked why this school in specific was chosen and could not really get an answer. The person I asked only kept going on about it being good for the kids to have someone who speaks English so they can learn the language more easily. This might make sense, but only if the pupils already have a little understanding of the language and someone speaking it daily will help them practice it. As I was teaching lower and upper KG though, this did not seem like a good reason, seeing that the kids did not know any English at all, and only learned what I specifically taught them in lesson. Things that are so basic that even the none English speaking teachers could have taught it. Also, my project executive, Sandhya, did a very good job. But sadly she was available, or had not been asked to come in the first week. Which means, that I only spent five instead of six weeks really teaching the class. So in summary, I enjoyed the experience at the school, but I don’t think my workforce as a volunteer was very well placed there.

I experienced some difficulties in the first two weeks, where the manager at the orphanage just took me and some other volunteers around different places, and we didn’t actually get to spend any time at the orphanage – witch is the reason that we came here – to spend time with the children. After two weeks i got to change to a different orphanage with another manager, and things there were much better. I had a small problem – witch was solved through idex. Overall i look back at my stay with a big smile. Iv’e met the most amazing children and got to know the Indian culture in a good way. Although it is sad that it took almost half my stay here until the project was good.

The project it self lacks a lot of support from Idex and also from the teachers who already work there. The only person who actually helped me a lot was Anita, my translator, who also helped me take care of the children. I also feel that the children are most used to memorizing things than actually learning and understanding them and that’s not goodt. On another hand the children are really amazing and it was an incredible opportunity for me to be able to teach them and see the little improvements they showed day by day.

Volunteering is one of the most interesting experiences. Allows you to leave your comfort zone and learn about other realities. Has changed my way to perceiving things, I’m very happy.

The experience with the children was amazing. They are cute and very smart. Each one has a different difficulty but all have presented evolution. I am very pleased with the volunteer work

Help In Suffering is a very good project to work at if you love animals and want to help them. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to study veterinarian nurse or not, which is why I choose this hands on project to maybe find my answer to this. I was surprised with the organisation and I am definitely coming back to HIS again some day. There will always be some language barrier but as soon as you’ve been working there for some time, it will improve a lot. I can definitely recommend HIS if you love animals and want to help where you can.

I would recommend this program to everyone. The experience is amazing. Starting with the volunteer work, but also, the cultural immersion. Daily Indian routine, workshops, adding the fact that you have the chance to explore touristic places. Is the best option for who wants to help to change the world and also get to know a new culture.

The experience was incredible and I am really grateful to be able to say that I got to have a nice time in India. I felt really immersed in the culture and all the staff made me feel very welcomed here. I am also satisfied with my program of choice Women Empowerment. My critique is that I think IDEX lacks organization on the programs, the volunteers are often unprepared due to insufficient information. Besides, I would have liked to know beforehand that the date I chose would fall on a holiday, due to that I was only able to work 4 days out of the 14 that I paid for, that was really disapointing. Overall the experience was great nonetheless.

The experiences included in the program were amazing- something money can’t buy and you get to really live and experience real India. The project for me wasn’t what I expected. I chose the teaching project and I thought I would be helping a teacher like a teaching assistant but I was the teacher which I found really difficult as I wasn’t sure how to teach them. I felt that I wasn’t really prepared so a a little more preparation would help future volunteers. Overall the experience was fantastic and I would recommend it to other people.

It was wonderful to see how the children actually learned something from my lessons. I think it’s important that volunteers keep doing this project, because the knowledge of English by the local teachers is very limited. Therefore is the teaching by volunteers not easy.

I really enjoyed my time here with Idex. The team are very supportive, and make sure you are having a good time also. The program was very enlightening and helped me personally to learn a lot about the importance of culture! I wish that I knew that I had to book a flight to Delhi instead of to Jaipur as I would have loved to go to Agra. Besides from that, I would definitely recommend this organisation to a friend.

Loved having the opportunity to teach a selection of subjects to the children. It’s been great to see them engaging in the material and learning new things. I enjoyed my stay at the idex house as well, everyone was friendly, the food was very tasty and overall a good experience.

Fantastic experience in Kathmandu, Nepal, as volunteer teacher in Ages Graded English Secondary School. IDEX staff are very supportive, and location/accommodation is superb. Teaching staff at my school also extremely supportive and helpful during my time there. Would highly recommend volunteering with IDEX for a month, or longer if possible. The experience, culture and people will certainly enrich your life and ensure some amazing memories.

We are really happy about our trip with Idex volonteering. We had a great time both at the camp and at our projects. It was a bit hard in the beginning with the lesson planning and to learn how to take own responsibility, but it all worked out in the end. We have learned so much during this experience and everyone in the staff has been amazing.

Great accommodation, better food and even better staff! The staff are always very helpful and respectful and ensure you have a good time. The projects are very rewarding and provide a good cultural insight into the local culture of Colombo.

Overall, things really have been great. All the staff have been very nice and committed to their work. Accommodation and food have been great. Have meet some incredibly nice people and shared many good times with the other volunteers. The work has been very interesting and rewarding, the students have been nice and welcoming. There is of course room for some improvement, however, specifically in the classroom. I really do believe that the students would benefit from more structured lessons, and more structured lesson planning. I think that maybe the teachers should consider doing more repetition in class. One day we are doing multiplication (first time for many of the students) and then the other day we are talking about human anatomy and different body parts. Who would expect the children to actually remember any of the multiplication, if they only get to do it once or twice a week? Focusing on certain things for a longer period of time would ensure that the children are in fact remembering what they are being taught. On the other hand though, I of course understand the urgency at hand, and wanting to teach the children as much as possible in as little time as possible.

The kids were just awesome!! I had such an amazing time here in Sri Lanka. When I arrived everybody welcomed me so friendly. The children directly came to me very interested and already after 5min the ice was broken and we sang and danced together. I was able to teach them some letters, numbers, animals, body parts and family members. The cutest thing ever was their reaction on my last day…before I left 10 kids came to me and gave me kisses. But maybe it was because I gave all of them a little present (clothes, candy, toys) before. That was just so fulfilling and satisfying to see their happy faces. At home the staff of Idex was absolutely perfect..they supported me in every situation and we always had a nice time together and something to laugh about. All in all I am very sad to leave now, because I had an unbelievable time. I will miss this a lot.

The volunteering was for 4 hours each morning in a day care center for about 8 2 year olds, which increased to 30 when the 5 year old arrived from class. There was lots of opportunity to play with lots of little people which was fun.

i had a nice stay for three weeks in Jaipur with Idex. The staff is amazing, the location of the house too. The volunteer work itself is good. I was at a school where there were already two teachers but the volunteers do the work and give English, maths or computerclasses. Jaipur is a lovely city with many sightseeing’s that you must see.
